WHALE EXPEDITIONS

The Baja California desert is unique with its exotic flora and fauna, but what enchants most is the abundant marine life, something that famous underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau referred to as the “world’s aquarium.” An excursion with Baja Sur Tours can immerse you among this colorful paradise with naturalist guides providing intriguing scientific information to enhance the experience. Snorkel among sea lions and nearly 900 types of tropical fish, swim alongside whale sharks, or get up close to the star of the show: the whales.

Or perhaps all of the above?

ENCOUNTERING BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR'S GENTLE GIANTS

Whales-08.jpg

Blue whales, gray whales, and humpbacks can all be seen off the shores of Baja California Sur

Blue Whales, which can reach as long as 100 feet as the largest animal ever to exist, even larger than the biggest dinosaur. In Loreto, you can get up close to them as they come here to mate, calve, and feed during the winter months.

Magdalena Bay is internationally renowned for Gray Whales that congregate here during the winter and early spring. Hundreds of them arrive to this protected lagoon every year as it’s the ideal place for the whales to give birth and raise their young. Only a limited number of tour operators are permitted to bring guests to see them, and the whales often approach with curiosity about their human visitors, setting up an experience of a lifetime.

Thousands of Humpback Whales begin to gather around the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula in November and December, with peak time January through March. The animals may look a bit grumpy faced, but it’s a jovial, family reunion kind of atmosphere with lots of acrobatics. Watching a 30+ ton whale breach in front of you is something that you’ll never forget.

To make the experience even better, our safaris are Super VIP tours, which means you not only get a highly educated nature science guide, but super personalized treatment to ensure a trip that’s individualized just for you. We’ll ask what interests you most and customize it according to your wishes. Plus, transportation in an SUV is provided throughout to ensure a comfortable ride.
